Rifle Information
Starting January 11, 2021, Fly Safair in South Africa will begin offering domestic transportation services for rifles within the country. The rifles commonly used include those with calibers such as .243 .270, .308, .30-06, .300 win. Mags, Wetherby's .338, and .375. If you need a rifle, you can rent one from Mavanru at a reasonable cost. It's recommended to practice shooting with a friend's rifle beforehand to become comfortable with handling and firing an unfamiliar weapon, especially from long bipod or tripod shooting sticks, with the typical shooting distance ranging from 100 to 300 yards.
For travelers bringing their own rifles, it's necessary to obtain the SAP 520 temporary rifle import permit and the trophy requirements document. Additionally, you'll need to provide a copy of your passport, itinerary, proof of rifle ownership (Form 4457 from your local customs office), proof of export (obtained at the airport upon departure), and a letter of invitation from your hunting outfitter.

Regarding firearm importation procedures, here are the updated requirements as of August 2004:
Travelers planning to bring firearms into South Africa for hunting purposes must complete a SAP 520 Temporary Import Application, which can be obtained from their outfitter, downloaded from the SAPS Website (https://www.saps.gov.za/services/flash/firearms/importation.php), or filled out upon arrival. It's advisable to complete the form beforehand to expedite processing time at the Police Office.
